When we talk about mysteries, Internet is to great place to
start from. There is much unexplainable stuff on the Internet and there are not
much information about these Internet mysteries, but it is like a puzzle to the
human mind. From the famous cicada 3301
to the unexplainable spying operation GhostNet, let’s take a look to the top
ten most bizarre, horrifying and mysterious Internet mysteries that humans have
ever encountered.
Number 1. A858
A858 is the name of a mysterious subreddit A858DE45F56D9BC9.
Since 2011, the unknown owner of the subreddit is posting thousands of long
coded text messages to the subreddit almost every day. These messages are
written entirely in hexadecimal. Many people used their full brain to decode
the meaning behind these strange hexadecimal codes, but failed.
These strange
messages had attracted so much of the reddit users that a separate subreddit
was set up named SOLVING_A858, to decode the messages. In this group genius
minds have tried advanced code breaking technique to decode these puzzles but
nobody has ever found who is the person behind this and the meaning of those
subreddit.
Many people believe
that it is some kind of secret messages for some secret society or secret
agencies; on the other hand some believe that this is just a prank by some
genius. There is also a theory in the
community SOLVING_A858 that if anybody can track the person who spread the news
about A858, we will probably get to know who the person behind A858 is; but
unfortunately nobody has ever tracked even that person.
Number 2. Cicada 3301
This is the name given to the enigmatic organisation that on
four occasions has posted a set of complex puzzles and alternate reality games
to recruit code breakers from the public – first on January 4, 2012, second on
January 4, 2013, third on January 4, 2014, fourth on January 5, 2016. 3301
group is said to be the Illuminati of the digital world. Since 2012 to every
year in the first week of January, it posts a highly complex puzzle to recruit
highly intelligent individuals.
It is believed that Cicada 3301 is a large organisation
spread over different countries. Nobody knows why they recruit people, what is
their purpose and what happens to the recruited members.
The first ever
message from Cicada 3301 stated-
This message attracted a lot
of computer minds and got a lot of publicity. About a month later, another
message declaring that the hunt is over came from the 3301 group.
Puzzles
posted by 3301 are focused on data security, cryptography and steganography.
These puzzles have different phases or stages. In every stage it gives clues to
go to the other stage. Its clues have spanned many different communication
media like internet, telephone, music and have reference to literature, art,
philosophy, mathematics and technology while other clues are in different
physical location to go and search.
Some people believe that these puzzles are
posted by NSA, CIA or MI6 to recruit highly intelligent individuals but it is
never confirmed and also there is no proof.
A
man, named Joel Eriksson had gone too far in solving the puzzles but before he
could complete, the hunt was declared over by the Cicada 3301. Nobody knows
about what happens to the winners, after they complete the puzzle.
Number 3. The creator
of Bitcoin
Many of us are aware
of what Bitcoin is. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency or digital money. It is also
become very valuable today since 1 bitcoin is equal to about US$430. Bitcoin
itself is very complicated and mysterious as it is decentralized but the more
mysterious part of it is the creator of bitcoin.
Satoshi Nakamoto is
the name given to the person or the group who invented bitcoin. Nobody knows
who Satoshi Nakamoto is. First it was believed that he is Japanese but by
analyzing the coding of bitcoin it was found that the coding didn’t consist of
any Japanese signature and the use of perfect English also deny that the
creator belong to Japan. Then it was believed that he may be from Australia.
But all these are just assumption; we don’t even know he is an individual or a
group.
In the finding several
names came in the way like Nick Szabo, Dorian Nakamoto, Hal Finney, and Craig
Steven Wright but no one was confirmed to be Satoshi Nakamoto.
Why the identity of
Satoshi Nakamoto is hidden, what was the purpose of inventing bitcoin, why
bitcoin is made decentralised, all these questions remained unanswered. To this
date the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto is unknown.
Number 4. The Markovian Parallax Denigrate
This is the oldest
surviving Internet mystery. This mystery started as the spam message that
flooded the Usenet, which was a popular web chat community popular in the early
1990s. This first appeared in 1996 under the username Markovian Parallax
Denigrate. These messages were consist of random words and phrases arranged in
a meaningless order. The appearance of these messages over a large extent
suggested the influence of a very human intelligence.
Many talented and
intense computer minds of the community tried to decode the meaning of the messages
but failed. No one could figure out what the meant, or how exactly they were
generated and distributed.
This is a part of one
of the messages -
After some time when
Usenet was replaced by World Wide Web, people forgot about it and much of its
messages disappeared in trash heap of dead links. But some of its links are
still preserved and are in constant effort to decode.
In 2012, the Daily
Dot reported a link between the Parallax and Susan Lindauer, a journalist who
worked as a spy for Saddam Hussein. But she is not accepting her any
involvement in the Parallax.
Number 5. Oct282011.com
Oct282011.com is a
website created on June 8, 2011. This website is weird as well as mysterious.
This website is mostly a dark screen containing a few cryptic lines of text, a
link that takes to images of pyramid, eyes and Schrodinger’s cat and a phone
number.
No one knows who
created it and for what purpose. No one ever understands what the meaning of
those lines and images is. The phone number is even more scary and creepy,
people who called the number said that they hear long beep sound, horrible
screaming, dragging of heaving objects and several other horrible and creepy
sounds.
Some believe that
this site is a recruitment site like the 3301 group while other believes that
it is an evil prank. After sometime when more people get curious and attracted
to this site then this site grasped some publicity in the reddit community. The
reddit community stared talking about it and tried to decode the secrets of
this website. Just after reddit got involved, the site shut down.
To this day this site
is active but all that remains are banner ads, presumably put by the new owner.
Who was behind the original site, that horrible phone number, meaning of those
images, all these still remain unknown.
Number 6. Deep web
Facebook, Google,
Yahoo, etc. sites that we use in our daily life are just surface web. Surface
web is known to everyone and can be found by search engines. Surface web is
also easily traceable. Just opposite of surface web is the deep web. Even to
access deep web we need special software like Tor. It is really very hard to
trace what going on deep web.
Deep web consist of
stuff that are completely illegal such as drug dealing, human trafficking,
stolen credit card numbers, child porn, hit men and many more dark stuff. It
also contains government secrets, and even terrorist communication. No one
knows what’s more in there.
All these illegal
activities are working freely on the deep web because their source is unknown. Even
the transactions are done in bitcoin on the deep web which is also
decentralized and untraceable.
Deep web is one of
the greatest mysteries of the modern era. No one knows what is going on the
deep web and what more deep web contain.
Number 7. Mariana’s Web
Mariana’s web is the
deepest part of the internet, even deeper than the deep web. As far the human
knowledge no one has ever accessed Mariana’s web. The normal computers and
software that we know today cannot be used to access Mariana’s web. It can only
be access by using Polymeric Falcighol Derivation, which requires quantum
computers to work. Unfortunately till now they don’t exist but they are in
process of building.
Mariana’s web is said
to consist of everything that humanity have ever seen—humanity’s best kept
secrets, even the location of Atlantis. It is like the Vatican secret archives
but the internet version. It is rumoured that Mariana’s web is
the home of a super intelligent computer artificial intelligence that has
become sentient and overlooks and also controls the entire internet like some
digital mother nature.
We can’t say that
Mariana’s web is an internet hoax or truth since no one has ever entered there.
But quantum computers soon to become a reality and this mystery may end there.
Number 8. Webdriver Torso
Webdriver Torso is a YouTube
channel that post videos containing red and blue shapes accompanied by beeping
sound. Its videos are of length form 10 seconds to even 25 minutes and all it
shows is that shapes and beeping sound. Between duration of every 1 to 10 minutes, it
posts a new video.
It started in
September 2013 until mid-April, when it mysteriously stopped, but after
sometime it started again and to this day it is working.
No one knows the
meaning of these videos. When asked to Google about this, they replied that
this is there testing channel but most of the people believe that it is just a
cover up. Even BCC deny believing this. Google has shown no proof ensuring that
this is their channel and if it is what is it for.
Many believe that it is a communication
between secret societies, groups or spies. Some even believe it is
communication from aliens! It is hard to tell that is it for communication
because decoding this is almost impossible. Nobody knows who is behind this and
what is the purpose of these strange videos.
Number 9. GhostNet
GhostNet is the name
given to the large scale cyber spying operation discovered in 2009. This affected
thousands of computers in 103 countries. The spying was on Computer system
belonging to embassies, foreign ministers and government offices, and the Dalai
Lama’s Tibetan exile centers in India, London and New York City.
This spying was
mainly focused on Dalai Lama’s private network. The activities of this network
were mostly centered at China but there is no evidence suggesting that the
Chinese Government is involved in it.
GhostNet is the
biggest spying operation ever found and the most surprising part is that no one
was able to found out who was behind it and what the purpose of this operation
was. After discovery in March 2009 when the researchers at the Information
Warfare Monitor started searching for the source of this cyber spying, they
were unable to track the source but they found out that GhostNet expand by
sending emails to target organizations with malicious attachment, which when
opened, drop a Trojan horse to the system that connects to the control server.
Computers infected by GhostNet, enabled them
to monitor the surveillance cameras. Today even after almost 7 years and
constant efforts to find them, we are unable to uncover this internet mystery.
Number 10. Internet Black Holes
Internet communication is a great source to stay connected with the world. We simply have to write the message, press send and just microseconds later it is in someone’s inbox. But everything is just not that simple. Sometime the message or email simply disappears or a part of it disappears and no one knows where it goes. This is known as Internet Black Holes. In technical we can say, it refers to places in the network where incoming or outgoing traffic is silently discarded without informing the source about that.
From the early ages
of the internet, it is seen that the message or data failed to get to their
desired destination, this phenomenon is weird and surprising because data can’t
just vanish, it have to go somewhere. The lost data is very hard to trace
because the black holes are themselves invisible. One can find a black hole in
the network only by monitoring the lost data. Monitoring data is possible only
by examining the topology of the network, but this also fails to track the
black holes sometimes.
The most severe case
of internet black hole was once seen in North Korea. There are also small black
holes in our daily life but most of them are so small that they went unnoticed.
Many attempts have
been done to remove this black hole thing but no efficient method found, since
it very hard to study about these mysterious Internet Black Holes.
